Father Godfrey, a 46-year-old Roman Catholic priest, injured his knee during a soccer game in Malta in December 2004. He bandaged it for three days, but after removing the bandage developed a pulmonary embolism, though initially he and his doctor thought it was malaria due to his history with the disease from working in Nigeria. After a week of worsening symptoms including extreme weakness and breathlessness, he was admitted to the hospital where tests ruled out malaria and diagnosed bilateral pulmonary embolism. He was transferred to intensive care that evening. The next morning while trying to raise himself to eat breakfast, he passed out. During this time, he experienced great peace and happiness, though he saw no lights and heard no voices. The experience was profoundly positive. When the medical staff brought him back to consciousness, he felt very irritated, as if enjoying a beautiful movie that suddenly went dark during the best part. He regained consciousness to find his heart rate around 200 beats per minute with nurses shouting at him to breathe. He realized he was soaking wet and understood he had been dead. He learned the alarm went off during the nurse shift change, causing initial panic about who would attend to him. As a priest, his beliefs were not changed but significantly strengthened. He now feels much more certain of life beyond death and no longer fears dying as much as before.
