On March 9, 2011, Gene entered the hospital for colon resection surgery and was discharged six days later. Within two hours of returning home, he developed severe sepsis with high fever and organ shutdown because the surgical stitches had failed. On March 16, he was readmitted for emergency surgery to repair his burst colon. The following day he developed an abscess, and during surgery for that complication on March 17, 2011, he coded on the operating table. His doctor later confirmed he had cardiac arrest for exactly three minutes and fifty-six seconds before they successfully resuscitated him.
During his clinical death, Gene found himself alert and standing barefoot in sand under a brilliant starry sky. A well-illuminated thatched hut was visible in the distance. Upon entering it, he experienced overwhelming warmth, joy, and love. His deceased parents were seated to his right - his father who died at age 70 in 1992 and his mother who died at age 92 in 2007. He greeted them, put a sweater around his mother's shoulders and hugged her. His father smiled and touched his forearm. Also present was his deceased friend, the former chief of police who died in October 2010 at age 74, who greeted Gene by his nickname "Knute." All three deceased individuals appeared much younger, perhaps in their late twenties or early thirties. The most significant veridical element was that Gene's legs stopped working when Jesus told him to return - he wanted to go through the bright doorway but found his legs had quit functioning. When he later awoke in the ICU days later, his legs were similarly not working, creating a direct correlation between his NDE experience and his physical condition. Gene saw a brilliant light emanating from a doorway and felt drawn to it. A figure he recognized as Jesus appeared with piercing blue eyes, communicating telepathically that it wasn't his time and he needed to go back. The doctor confirmed the exact duration of his cardiac arrest. After the experience, Gene transformed from skeptical to deeply spiritual. Having worked in law enforcement for 32 years, he had become skeptical of everything and everyone. The NDE brought him inner peace, increased compassion, and made him more forgiving and expressive of love. He developed a strong desire to learn Bible teachings and spread the word about salvation. He became a better person, husband, and father. His fear of death completely disappeared, replaced by certainty about God's existence and the afterlife.
