On March 9, 2011, at 5 PM on Easter Island, Gary was riding his scooter to work at a hotel when he was in a serious accident very close to his workplace. He has no memory of the accident itself - felt no pain, heard no noise. He woke up in the hospital at 10 PM covered in tubes, indicating severe medical trauma requiring life support and intensive medical intervention. The five-hour gap and medical equipment suggest a life-threatening event with possible loss of consciousness or clinical death.
During his NDE, Gary found himself in an amazingly white corridor with his deceased mother-in-law, who had died from thrombosis after being bedridden for two years. Gary and his wife had cared for her during her illness. She appeared as a Rapa Nui (native Polynesian inhabitant of Easter Island) wearing a white dress and appearing very tall. She spoke to him in the Rapa Nui language, saying "Kaoho Koe" which means "to return" or "follow your path." He experienced incredible vividness, with everything happening at once or time stopping. His thoughts were incredibly fast, and he felt he gained awareness of things elsewhere, understanding everything about the universe. The most significant veridical element was the specific Rapa Nui phrase "Kaoho Koe" spoken by his deceased mother-in-law, telling him to return. This culturally specific communication in the indigenous language of Easter Island from someone who had died provides a unique verificatory aspect. Gary immediately shared this with his wife upon awakening, who along with others in their Rapa Nui community found it highly credible since they had known his mother-in-law. The fact that she appeared and gave him a direct message to return in her native language when he was near death is particularly meaningful. After the experience, Gary looks at life more calmly and sees nature as more colorful and beautiful than before. He feels he has a guardian angel watching over him. The experience was so powerful it makes him emotional and brings him to tears when remembering it. He gained understanding about universal connection and feels certain about the afterlife's existence.
