Frances attempted suicide through drug and alcohol overdose in June 1994. By the time her son found her, she had turned blue and was in critical condition. The neighbor was alerted and during transport to the hospital, her heart stopped completely. Paramedics performed CPR in the ambulance to maintain minimal life function to get her to the hospital. Upon arrival, medical staff worked urgently to stabilize her vital signs and flush out the toxins ravaging her body. She remained unconscious for approximately 10 hours before awakening in the ICU on a ventilator.
During her clinical death, Frances experienced a hellish NDE. From outside her body, she watched the paramedics performing CPR on her during transport. As they arrived at the hospital, she began descending into darkness through a very dark tunnel. Demons appeared around her and, though she was in spirit form, they went through the motions of ripping her flesh off with intense pain. Going deeper into Hell, she encountered many prominent historical figures and finally her deceased father, who turned to welcome her to Hell. She thought this was her eternal fate with no possibility of escape. Suddenly, she began moving away from them, back up the tunnel toward her body. Frances demonstrated veridical perception by accurately observing the paramedics performing CPR on her when her heart had stopped during ambulance transport. She also watched the medical procedures being performed in the emergency room while remaining outside her body. She could see the doctors working to stabilize her vital signs and flush the drugs and alcohol from her system. She later told doctors about witnessing these specific medical interventions that occurred while she was clinically dead. After her heart restarted and vital signs stabilized, she was pulled back into her body. Following this experience, Frances entered addiction treatment and achieved sobriety, maintaining it for 18 years at the time of her report. She became an Addiction Specialist to help others avoid the misery she experienced. The experience transformed her from someone with no compassion (except when caring for hospice patients) to someone deeply caring about fellow humans. Her spiritual beliefs changed dramatically - from atheist to spiritual, though she doesn't necessarily believe in God, she knows there's something greater that cares for people.
