Fergus arrived at the hospital suspecting a heart attack when he experienced complete cardiac arrest in the emergency room. Beyond the fence stood a group of at least twenty people dressed in close-fitting robes of unfamiliar material, silently watching him. Though too dark to see features clearly, he was certain he knew them all. His deceased parents stood at the front center of the group, recognizable by their outline and position. Beside the group was an ancient stone archway with a path leading through a long dark valley toward a distant bright light on the horizon, like a distant city's glow, with beautiful purple hues in the sky above. The experience contained profound mystical elements rather than specific veridical observations. The rail fence served as a clear boundary between life and death, with the glowing top rail suggesting divine demarcation. The gathering of recognized deceased loved ones, particularly his parents in prominent positions, provided deep emotional significance. The ancient archway and path toward distant light represented the classic journey toward the afterlife. After standing and observing this scene, Fergus felt pulled back and suddenly awoke to medical staff calling his name and applauding his return. He wept with gratitude for the staff who brought him back and with the realization of how close he had come to leaving his family. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his conviction about the afterlife's reality.
