Fausto was swimming in a pond in Monterrey, Mexico, when his right leg became entangled in underwater branches. Unable to free himself, he remained calm initially, thinking he would signal for help. As time passed underwater (5-8 minutes according to friends), he experienced a profound out-of-body state. He had been familiar with OBEs since age 8, but this was his most powerful experience.
Leaving his body, Fausto rose up and observed his friends on the bank, clearly hearing their worried comments about how long he had been underwater. He attempted to communicate that he was stuck and needed help, but they could not hear him. Accepting his fate, he returned to his body to await death peacefully. Suddenly, he felt multiple hands lifting him - under his armpits, on his stomach and back. Opening his eyes expecting to see his friends, he was amazed to see three beings completely covered in white sheets or robes. These beings freed his entangled foot and lifted him to the surface, expelling water from his lungs. The most remarkable veridical aspect was Fausto's detailed observation of his friends' specific worried comments while he was underwater and unconscious. He heard them say things like "He has been a long time coming back up, maybe something has happened to him?" and "That crazy Fausto, why didn't he tell us he could hold his breath this long?" When rescued, his friends confirmed they had not entered the water and had not seen the white-robed beings who saved him. The experience left Fausto with absolute certainty about spiritual reality and non-physical existence. He believes he was given a second chance at life for a specific purpose, which he later understood through his work as a parapsychologist publishing over 170 articles on related subjects.
