Evie was a deeply depressed teenager living with an abusive mother and her boyfriend after being separated from her protective grandmother. Following a forced abortion at age 14 that devastated her emotionally, she attempted suicide by overdosing on antidepressants. Her grandmother had come to help after learning of her first hospitalization. After taking an entire bottle of pills, paramedics were called when she lost consciousness.
During the experience, Evie found herself observing from outside her body, watching the ambulance arrive and the paramedics work on her. She could see everything from an elevated perspective - the ambulance driving down the street, the paramedics entering the house, and her grandmother's profound worry and shock. She watched them check for vital signs and load her onto a stretcher. The most striking aspect was her ability to feel her grandmother's emotions directly - the confusion, shock, and worry. When she saw her own face and body from outside, she realized she existed as something more than just physical form. Evie observed specific details about the scene that she couldn't have known from her unconscious state. She saw the ambulance approaching from down the street, watched the paramedics' actions, and witnessed her uncle's shocked expression. Most remarkably, she could feel the emotional states of those present, particularly her grandmother's intense worry at the ambulance doors. She had a profound realization that she was making others suffer and felt she had a choice about whether to return to life. After choosing to return, everything went black. She awoke in a psychiatric hospital, where she eventually met her future husband - a meeting she recognized as deeply significant and purposeful. The experience left her with an unshakeable conviction that she had a purpose to fulfill, though she still doesn't know exactly what it is.
