Herbert, a minister working with Vietnam veterans with PTSD, experienced a heart attack during a Native American sweat lodge ceremony. Initially feeling chest heaviness and discomfort, he stepped outside and saw San Pablo Bay filled with dancing bubbles of light. After returning to complete the ceremony, his condition worsened. His friend drove him toward the hospital, during which Herbert left his body through the car window and watched them drive away. He journeyed through a landscape to a cobblestone path that forked - one way led to a dark canyon with ashes and barbed wire, the other through a tunnel filled with stone people waiting. At the tunnel's end, he entered a field of colorful flowers and singing trees, where thousands welcomed him. Deceased family members and friends greeted him, followed by beings of light and flame. Then appeared a divine light brighter than all suns, which embraced him in infinite love. He experienced a complete life review seeing his life as one whole event. When asked if he was done, he requested time to comfort his family. Despite being told to go three times, he refused to leave God's presence. Finally commanded to return, he was shown visions of humanity's future before returning to his body in the emergency room.
