On May 14, 2005, Eduardo experienced a severe medical crisis due to a medical error during a CT scan procedure. He was accidentally administered a double dose of contrast dye when the first injection went outside the vein and a second dose was then correctly injected intravenously. As soon as the contrast liquid entered his circulatory system, he experienced a severe allergic-like reaction. Within seconds, he developed renal failure and began hyperventilating before losing consciousness and all visual and auditory contact with the world around him.
During his loss of consciousness, Eduardo experienced a classic near-death phenomenon. He felt himself being lifted up and traveling through the air in a dark space that seemed infinite. In the far distance, he saw a small but intensely bright light toward which he was traveling at incredible speed. As he moved through this dark tunnel-like space, he witnessed something extraordinary - floating alongside him were moving pictures of his entire life, displayed like frames of camera film. These scenes traveled at such velocity that it seemed incomprehensible how they could be visible at that rate, yet he could see them clearly. The life review included scenes from his birth, childhood, boyhood, and adult life, all at continuously accelerating speed. The images included very beautiful scenes and important life moments that Eduardo had thought were forever forgotten. He was amazed that memories he believed lost were being shown to him in vivid detail. The scenes continued to accelerate faster and faster as he approached the distant light. Just as he was about to reach the brilliant light at the end of the tunnel, he suddenly felt himself pulled away and regained consciousness in the recovery room. The entire experience left him with mixed emotions - both fear and wonder at what had occurred. Upon reflection, Eduardo was struck by the classic nature of his experience, matching many accounts he had heard about in movies but had never truly understood. He remains uncertain whether the tunnel experience represents the brain's elaborate response to critical life-threatening conditions or genuinely represents a passage to the great beyond. The experience was undeniably real to him and has left him more respectful and grateful regarding the concept of life itself. The vividness of forgotten memories and the incredible speed at which his entire life was reviewed during the crisis remains one of the most remarkable aspects of his experience.
