On May 13, 2011, Earl experienced a massive heart attack that led to an extraordinary near-death experience with multiple cardiac arrests. While home between classes, he ate lunch and then felt excruciating chest pains, describing it as a cold iron fist crushing his heart. After calling for an ambulance that couldn't find him, he made the remarkable but dangerous decision to walk approximately three miles to the emergency room. Upon arrival, he announced "I'm having a heart attack" and immediately collapsed, fracturing his skull along the temporal and frontal plates on the right side of his forehead. His heart stopped beating for a total of 90 minutes across three separate arrests: 45 minutes initially (restarted for 8 minutes), then 25 minutes (restarted for 5 minutes), and finally 20 minutes before his cardiologist nearly called time of death.
During his third and final arrest, Earl experienced a profound NDE. There was no bright tunnel but rather a diffuse light emanating from everywhere. He became aware of being surrounded by his ancestors, many whom he'd never met in life. They all spoke simultaneously - not in voices but directly to his mind. Remarkably, he knew some were speaking languages he didn't understand, yet he comprehended everything being communicated. He understood what was being asked without being explicitly asked. The light wasn't exceptionally bright but was totally devoid of shadows and contrast, making everything part of the light with no distinctions. He could hear a thousand voices at once and sort each one from the others without confusion. Earl described his family "from the beginning" all around him, with his entire knowledge and life experience being poured out on a great table for all to see and examine. Some specific matters were addressed by the ancestors. He experienced extreme calm and peace interspersed with moments of absolute terror as he went back and forth between the dead and living. During the experience, he realized he has a higher purpose to fulfill and understood that death is merely a dark doorway through which all must pass. He felt connected to his ancestral line from the beginning, understanding that "we are all the same people, and we come and go, but still we remain." After spending 10 days in a coma following the resuscitation, Earl awoke with transformed perspectives. His experience eliminated his fear of death completely, though paradoxically he became more fearful of earthly perils despite having no fear of any man or earthly thing before his NDE. He feels totally isolated as someone who has "crossed over the Rivers Styx and Acheron and returned," finding it difficult to share such an experience. The medical team, including his cardiologist, emergency room nurse, and paramedics, confirmed that his heart restarted just as the doctor was declaring they would call time of death if it didn't start within 10 more minutes.
