In July 1964, Dwight experienced a near-death event while working as a lifeguard at a swimming pool. He had developed a daily routine of swimming the fifty-meter pool underwater before the facility opened. On this particular day, he decided to push his limits by swimming the full fifty meters, turning at the wall, and continuing for ten more strokes before surfacing for air. He remembered making the turn and completing three strokes, after which his consciousness ceased and he lost all awareness of the physical world.
The next thing Dwight became aware of was awakening to another lifeguard named Jeff, who had been watching and noticed when Dwight stopped moving in the water. Jeff quickly entered the pool, retrieved him, and applied back-pressure arm-lift resuscitation, successfully reviving him. During the period of unconsciousness, Dwight experienced being inside a tunnel where everything outside the tunnel was moving at an extremely fast pace. He compared the sensation to looking out of a train window at the rapidly passing landscape. The tunnel experience was vivid and specific - he later found that a painting called "Ascent of the Blessed" by Hieronymus Bosch exactly depicted what he saw, and noted that representations on Dr. Melvin Morse's websites showing a small figure inside a tunnel matched his experience precisely. Following his return to consciousness, Dwight experienced mixed emotions of both excitement and disappointment. He had an immediate knowing that there was much more to the experience that he hadn't been able to access or complete. This sense of having missed out on a larger experience stayed with him. Despite the brevity of his NDE, it had lasting impacts on his life and spiritual development. Though religion was not important to him before the experience, it became greatly important afterward. By age 45, he attended the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, recognizing that much of his working life had been preparation for healing work. The tunnel experience left such a strong impression that over 40 years later, Dwight could still recall it more accurately than other life events from that time period. He immediately accepted it as real and shared it with his mother right away, though she showed little interest. The experience contributed to his later spiritual development, including memories of past lives and Buddhist beliefs, though he no longer fears death as he did before the NDE. He continues to believe the experience was as real as the three-dimensional world and maintains that immediate acceptance of its reality decades after it occurred.
