In 1974, at age 25, Donna experienced a profound near-death experience during surgery when a doctor's terrible mistake led to massive blood loss. She was under general anesthesia for a common but invasive medical procedure when the surgeon accidentally cut an artery near the end of the operation, causing blood loss too massive to sustain life. As her body lay dying on the operating table, her consciousness separated and she found herself observing the chaotic scene from above.
From her elevated perspective, Donna watched the medical team in a frenzy, yelling at each other, grabbing white towels, passing metal instruments, and sweating profusely as they desperately tried to save her. She felt their fear but couldn't understand their distress since she felt perfectly fine. She tried repeatedly to communicate with them, saying "Calm down," "Relax," and "Take it easy!" She even flew directly into their faces, going nose-to-nose with each team member, telling them to look at her and that she was all right. Despite her attempts, they acted as if they couldn't see or hear her, which frustrated her. After watching for a few minutes and growing bored with their lack of acknowledgment, she took off "like a bird," flying in circles above her lifeless form and the surgical team. Gradually ascending higher, Donna became enveloped in a brilliant white light that was brighter than the sun yet not glaring or harsh on the eyes. She could have remained there forever, basking in its warm, comfortable, mysterious glow. A magnificent masculine voice then addressed her as if she had awakened from a coma, telling her who she was, where she had been, and where she was from. This presence answered every question that had ever crossed her mind, treating her smallest concern as supremely important. She felt completely respected and loved. The voice even explained why her Aunt Bettie had married Uncle Fred, which had always puzzled her, causing her to laugh and say she remembered everything now. She experienced being in an ocean of white light, content until she heard a nurse scream "We're losing her!" The emotional distress hit her spirit like a cannonball, throwing her to within three inches of the ceiling. Looking at her spiritual body, Donna discovered two cherubs beside her, naked except for tiny loincloths, resembling Renaissance paintings. They identified themselves as "Escort Angels" who had come to take her home. As they positioned themselves beside her and drifted toward the corner of the ceiling, her head repeatedly hit the wall. One cherub reminded her she had forgotten something she must do before leaving. Remembering she needed to "look at the body," she examined the woman below - her 25-year-old form - and determined like a mechanic that she could fix her, saying "This isn't serious enough." She immediately plunged back into her body through the navel, having to twist and turn to make her spirit fit the stiffened form. After settling in, she made eye contact with the waiting cherubs to confirm she was all right, and they flew through the wall that had prevented her escape. She immediately regretted her decision, realizing she could have gone home but was once again trapped in a world of limitations.
