On July 9, 2010, exactly nine months after their wedding, Don and his wife Kathy embarked on a motorcycle trip to the Smoky Mountains that would end in tragedy and transformation. After only about forty miles of travel in severe rain conditions, they pulled over on the shoulder of a turnpike for safety. While standing away from their motorcycles with emergency flashers on, a car hydroplaned at approximately 60 mph directly into them. The driver had lost control trying to avoid a semi-truck and veered onto the shoulder where the couple stood. Don heard a loud "THUD" as the car struck them both, launching him onto the hood, into the windshield, and down the side of the vehicle, breaking off the driver's side mirror. Kathy was pulled under the car and dragged 120 feet, dying at the scene at 7:01 PM - the exact time they had their first dance nine months earlier.
During the impact, Don experienced what he describes as floating or hovering above his body. He saw a group of people standing and looking down at someone he eventually realized was himself, appearing as if they didn't know what to do. In this state, he felt no pain or discomfort despite his severe injuries. He experienced a telepathic or kinetic connection with Kathy, though not in physical form. He became aware of another presence, which he interpreted as an angel, engaged in what felt like a tug-of-war - the angel holding Kathy, Kathy holding him. Eventually, he felt a hard tug breaking him away from Kathy's presence, at which point he heard himself crying out "You're gone, aren't you? You're gone." He began crying with tears in his eyes. A seventeen-year-old aspiring pre-med student named Tyler, accompanied by his mother who was an ER trauma nurse, arrived at the scene approximately ten minutes after the accident. Tyler first went to Kathy and realized she had passed, then came to Don's side where several people were staring down at him as if he too had died. Tyler grabbed Don's cold, lifeless hand and began saying "Come back to us, come back!" This was when Don returned to consciousness, immediately feeling excruciating pain throughout his body and complete paralysis. He could barely breathe, feeling as though his chest had caved in. He kept screaming for Kathy but was only told "someone is with her." Once Kathy's ambulance left the scene, Don began regaining movement in his body parts. The experience profoundly transformed Don's understanding of death and divine purpose. He came to believe that God had orchestrated multiple "coincidences" that day - from the five kisses they shared before the accident to Tyler's presence as the perfect person to call him back. He interpreted his temporary paralysis as divine intervention preventing him from running to Kathy's side. Don now believes they had been given a divine opportunity to say goodbye through their repeated expressions of love moments before impact. He has lost all fear of death, grown closer to his faith, and developed strong bonds with his stepchildren, particularly his stepdaughter Beth, exactly as Kathy had predicted weeks before her death when she told him Beth would become invaluable to him.
