At approximately age 14 in 1962, Demi was camping with her family at Cape Lookout near Tillamook, Oregon, when she experienced a profound near-death experience while drowning in the ocean. She had met another girl her age and they were playing together in waist-deep water when she stepped into a deep sinkhole and was immediately pulled under by a powerful current. Initially terrified, she fought desperately to reach the surface, but the current proved too strong for her to overcome. As she struggled underwater, a remarkable transformation occurred in her consciousness.
Soon after realizing she could not reach the surface, Demi felt an overwhelming sensation of peace and love, accompanied by the distinct awareness of her soul leaving her body through the top of her head. She experienced no distress during this separation and felt no sorrow for the body she was leaving behind, not even looking back at it. She was immediately embraced by an overwhelming sense of love and acceptance, finding herself in a tunnel-like space surrounded by indescribable colors and music unlike anything she had ever experienced before. These were not ordinary colors or musical notes, but something entirely otherworldly that filled her with an unbelievable sense of love rather than fear. Ahead of her was an extraordinarily bright light that she initially thought might hurt her eyes, but it did not. She immediately understood that this light was the source and destination of all things, where everything comes from and returns to, and that when she entered it, she would know and be everything. She received several profound messages through direct knowing rather than verbal communication. The first and most important message was that love is the single most significant thing in the universe, that we are all the same, and specifically that she was exactly the same as every blade of grass. She was also told it was not her time and she had things to complete on Earth. Despite protesting because she wanted to remain in that state of indescribable love, she was gently but firmly told she had to return. Demi's return to her body was instantaneous, with her first memory being grabbed by her hair and pulled to the surface by her companion. Her initial reaction was anger at being brought back, followed by fear. She never told anyone about the experience for years, thinking people would consider her crazy. It wasn't until the 1970s when Elisabeth Kübler-Ross published "On Death and Dying" that she realized others had similar experiences. The message about being the same as every blade of grass puzzled her for decades, leading her to study physics, biology, and chemistry seeking answers. Years later, while watching a physics program about String Theory, she finally understood: the theory explained that inside quarks are millions of strings of pure energy whose shape and vibration determine whether something becomes "a rock, an elephant, a person or a blade of grass" - using the exact same phrase from her NDE, confirming the universal connection she had been shown.
