Debra, a teacher, experienced a traumatic brain injury and out-of-body experience on August 26, 2010, while supervising students during recess. She was monitoring approximately 120 children coming out of two cafeteria doors into a small space when she attempted to slow down a running child. She put her hand out and whistled at the child as they made eye contact, but the next thing she remembered was observing her own motionless body from an external vantage point.
During the out-of-body experience, Debra found herself viewing her still body lying on the concrete from approximately twenty-five yards away and six yards in the air. She had the conscious thought "that's my body, but I am over here," demonstrating clear awareness of the separation between her consciousness and physical form. She experienced a profound sense of total peace that she described as "a peace beyond understanding." Her consciousness was completely ethereal with no sense of having a body, and time seemed to cease existing entirely. The peace she felt was perfect and all-encompassing. From her elevated perspective, she observed three girls looking down at her unconscious body with concern. She could see the entire scene clearly from her vantage point above and away from where her physical body lay. When she eventually rejoined her body, she initially retained the sense of perfect peace and did not want to open her eyes to acknowledge the muffled voices of the concerned girls around her. Their voices gradually became audible to her conscious ears, and when she finally opened her eyes, she was immediately aware of severe pain throughout her body. Following the experience, Debra was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury from the incident. The out-of-body experience fundamentally transformed her spiritual views and eliminated her fear of death. She reported that the experience gave her an understanding of universal order, specifically that consciousness separates from the useless body at death to move into eternal space. The profound peace she experienced during the OBE remained memorable, and she noted that returning to her body and waking up was the worst part of the entire experience, as it meant leaving that state of perfect peace behind.
