Dan was a world champion skydiver in a plane crash in April/May 1992 where 16 of 22 people aboard were killed. He has no memory of the crash and was in a coma for over a month. When he woke, he had one crystal clear memory that wasn't a dream but as real as any experience. He found himself in free fall, which felt natural as a skydiver, but noticed it was quieter with slower wind and he wasn't descending. A gentle breeze suspended him. His friend James, who died in the crash, flew down to him with a playful smile and asked "Danny, what are you doing here?" Dan said he didn't know. James said "You're not supposed to be here, you have to get back down there." When Dan asked if James was coming with him, James sadly but firmly said "No, I can't" explaining it wasn't his decision. James continued with a gentle smile saying "I can't, but it's okay. There are more places to go, more things to do, more fun to have. Tell my mom it's okay. Tell her I'm okay." They looked at each other as Dan accepted this reality. James then spoke with authority: "Now you need to get back down there. You need to go get control of the situation." This experience confirmed Dan's belief in an afterlife and that our purpose extends beyond this lifetime. He told James's mother as soon as he could speak on the phone.
