In August 1996, Christopher was involved in a severe automobile accident resulting in multiple injuries including a traumatic brain injury to his right frontal lobe, crushed left hand and broken wrist, broken ribs, and numerous lacerations requiring twenty-eight stitches. He was transported by life-flight and remained in a coma for four days. Upon awakening, he found himself with a catheter, his crushed hand taped to his chest, paralyzed on his left side, and connected to numerous tubes and monitoring equipment. He had no memory of the accident itself, which medical staff explained is normal for head injuries. During his coma, Christopher experienced what he later understood to be an out-of-body experience. He remembered waking in darkness, thinking he was late for work, and getting out of bed to look for his clothes. He tried to look out the window but couldn't open the vertical blinds, and someone put him back to bed. When nurse Barbara later helped him stand for the first time, she assured him this was impossible given his injuries and paralysis. However, Christopher then remembered seeing an LED sign on top of the wardrobe cabinet by the window - describing it as 24 inches long by 4 inches wide, with a dark black or gray plastic face and red LEDs, though it wasn't turned on. The shocked nurse fetched a doctor who stood on a chair to retrieve the sign, confirming it matched Christopher's exact description. The doctor explained it had been placed there for a study on out-of-body experiences. Christopher noted that during his OBE, his left arm wasn't injured, he couldn't move the blinds despite them being lightweight, someone unseen had helped him back to bed whom he trusted, and remarkably, at 5'4" he could see the top of the six-foot wardrobe. The experience convinced him that consciousness can exist separately from the physical body and that he will survive death.
