Carmine, an Italian State Police agent serving with the Postal Police, was shot in the chest during a robbery at a Naples post office on June 19, 1991. The bullet cut his subclavian artery, cracked his first and second ribs, broke in two, and exited through his shoulder blade. During transport to the hospital, he was suffocating to death as memories flashed through his mind in frightening succession. He went into a coma and was stabilized, undergoing two surgeries. During the second operation under general anesthesia, he experienced his NDE. He saw a small light in total darkness and moved toward it, feeling absolute peace and well-being. An invisible force initially restrained him while he felt both positive and negative judgments and anxiety. When released, he continued toward a massive light knowing his place was with it. Upon reaching it, he saw thousands of lights like himself, all moving in harmony. He was happy knowing he belonged with them. Suddenly he returned at breakneck speed to find himself on the operating table. Though his body was still under anesthesia, he could hear and feel everything during the final hours of surgery. He felt shocked and anxious. Later, a monk who had listened to his story said in 25 years of hospital ministry, no one had shared such an experience and confirmed it was impossible to dream under anesthesia. The medical supervisor confirmed they had temporarily lost him during surgery.
