Brian was swimming and bodysurfing at a dangerous beach in Rio de Janeiro known for huge waves and treacherous rip currents. After swimming to exhaustion, he moved away from the surfing area and was caught in a vicious rip current. Three factors made this life-threatening: the powerful current, his exhaustion, and his lack of buoyancy due to muscular build and dense bones. While drowning, he experienced an out-of-body state where he could see the rescue attempt and had both close-up and hawk-eye views of the cove area. Most remarkably, his aerial view of the cove was later verified with stunning accuracy through satellite photos, aerial photography, and various vantage point photos. During the experience, he felt self-acceptance, unconditional positive regard, profound empathy, fearlessness about death, and overwhelming freedom and liberation. He was barely saved by a Brazilian surfer. The verified accuracy of his bird's-eye view provided strong evidence for the reality of his experience. He notes feeling connected to wholesome reality but not cosmic consciousness, and gained awareness that some evil is qualitatively real, not merely relative.
