Bret, a serious athlete, experienced muscle pain and weakness during softball practice. Blood work revealed dangerously elevated creatine kinase enzymes at 27,000 (normal is under 267). He was immediately hospitalized and suffered six heart attacks over four days. During the first attack, he stopped talking mid-conversation and was out for minutes before being revived. During the third attack, he floated inches above the bed, then found himself in his former bedroom confused, then in a black void. The fourth attack required full-strength defibrillator shocks. During the most significant experience on the fourth day, he observed from above as medical staff worked frantically on his unresponsive body, with paper being thrown to the floor and syringes being inserted into his IV. He then entered a serene, peaceful realm where he felt no pain, only floating with clouds in perfect peace. Without voice, the Lord asked if he was happy with his life accomplishments and if he wanted to stay. Though he wanted to remain in that peaceful state, he told God he had unfinished business - a 10-year-old son to raise and protect from his mentally ill mother. He was instantly slammed back into his body as the paddles struck at full strength. The medical team had called for the chaplain, and his mother was certain he was gone. The experience left him with PTSD but also with absolute certainty of heaven's existence and validation of his faith in Jesus Christ.
