On December 20, 2010, Bonnie woke at 3:15 AM in intense pain and immediately called an ambulance on a cold, snowy night. She insisted on being taken to a specific hospital where she had previously had tumor surgery. Her last conscious memory was telling the paramedic to hurry or she would die in the ambulance, then wondering why they were cutting off her bra in the resuscitation room. The feeling was fantastic: no pain, no worries, no sense of self. She came back to her body with a huge bang, feeling like she had dropped from a great height. She kept talking to stay conscious, telling jokes and stories about her famous brother. A stent was fitted, and the doctor later explained her survival was due to multiple factors: her fitness, quick ambulance call, choice of hospital with the best cardiac survival record, and the resuscitation team's immediate availability. Initially, she was angry about being brought back, preferring to have stayed in the peaceful void. As a Buddhist, she reflected that her experience aligned entirely with her beliefs, though she wondered if Christians might see heaven or Muslims might encounter virgins. The experience eliminated her fear of death, understanding it as blissful nothingness. She has since changed her life priorities, putting herself first and recognizing life's ultimate meaninglessness while maintaining compassion.
