Bill has experienced three separate NDEs throughout his life. The first occurred as a teenager when he had an allergic reaction to prescribed medicine, developing black gums with white blisters and a 105-degree fever. While looking in the mirror, he left his body and spent what seemed like 20 minutes on the ceiling observing his own backside before being shot back into his body like from a cannon, finding himself in the emergency room. The second NDE happened during a night baseball game when a ball crushed his skull. As he lay bleeding in the dirt with others trying to keep him alive, a messenger repeatedly told him he had to move. After initially refusing three times, he agreed and found himself lying in grass far from the baseball field for what seemed a very long time. When the messenger said he could return, he was suddenly back at third base as the ambulance arrived. The third and most profound NDE occurred when he contracted spinal meningitis and was hospitalized in isolation. On approximately the third day, his deceased best friend who had died at age 19 in Vietnam appeared to him, looking beautiful with all injuries healed. Bill jumped out of bed, not realizing he had left his body behind. A voice from the corner said "He is your friend and will tell you no lies." All pain was replaced by an indescribable feeling of acceptance, love, and peace. Bill asked his friend four questions and received answers he keeps sacred. His friend asked permission to be the one to collect him when his time came. Bill agreed to go immediately, but his friend said the timing might not be right and left. Bill then saw his body under the covers and climbed back in. He describes the feeling as so wonderful he was willing to give up everything to keep it.
