Bill was hunting about 20 miles from town when he was stung hundreds of times by hornets, triggering a severe allergic reaction in 1969 or 1970. His last conscious memory was being carried into the hospital emergency room by his friend. He recalls his final thought being about the staff cutting off his bra, wondering why they didn't just ask him to remove it. He then found himself above his body, observing as they wheeled him into the emergency room. From the corner of the room, he looked down at his body as medical staff worked on him, floating and seeing everything with no pain, just interest in the procedures. He observed an injection being given to his body. Suddenly, he was back in his body with a huge bang, feeling terrible and vomiting. He spoke to the doctor and told jokes to stay conscious. Later that morning, the doctor informed him he had been very lucky to survive, citing multiple factors: his fitness, quick ambulance call, insistence on that particular hospital with the best cardiac survival record, and the resuscitation team's immediate availability after unsuccessfully trying to revive a 30-year-old. Initially, Bill felt angry about being brought back, preferring to have stayed in the peaceful state. The experience transformed his religious views, leading him to see organized religion as a means of control while maintaining belief in consciousness and inner divinity. He no longer fears death and has become more compassionate, though he didn't discuss the experience for many years due to fear of being thought crazy.
