Aurora experienced a near-death event on August 20, 2011, during a severe thunderstorm. While standing in her yard wrapped in a bedsheet and using her phone, she was apparently struck by lightning or suffered a severe electrical shock. She was watching the intense lightning with dry air and rolling black clouds when, immediately after pressing send on a text message, everything shifted into slow motion. Though the entire event lasted approximately one minute, it felt like 10-15 minutes to Aurora.
A white light appeared to her left, similar to the afterimage from staring at a bright light. Her body felt heavy and she began lowering almost to her knees while feeling she wasn't breathing. Before hitting the ground, she lost all body sensation and found herself viewing the scene from an angle above her own body. She described the strange experience of looking down at herself, emphasizing how difficult it is to convey what it's like to observe one's own body from an external perspective. Before seeing herself hit the ground, she was "shot back" into her physical form. Upon return, Aurora's senses were overwhelmed - she smelled something burnt and her skin felt electric with constant static. When she regained feeling in her legs, she noticed it was now pouring rain. She managed to run inside and jump into a chair, experiencing a racing, painful heartbeat and difficulty breathing. Everything she touched produced electric shocks. She had left her phone outside, which she believes may have been the conduit for the electrical event. The experience left Aurora profoundly changed but distressed. She felt intense fear, regret, and sadness during the event, convinced she was dying with no sense of peace or spiritual presence. She found only desolate aloneness rather than comforting beings or light. Since the incident, she experiences persistent electrical sensitivity - getting severe shocks from static-prone materials like trampolines or wool, and frequently shocking other people through touch. She's developed heightened awareness of her surroundings, frequent déjà vu, but also increased fear of death and social withdrawal, now preferring solitude and struggling with negative thoughts about others' decisions.
