Anne N experienced a profound near-death experience in 2005 during a life-threatening medical crisis caused by severe lupus. She suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage at the emergency room after feeling unwell following work. When she told the nurse "I can't breathe, please help me" and began coughing up blood, she lost consciousness. Medical staff placed her in a drug-induced coma, on a respirator and life support. She developed organ failure, including kidney failure requiring dialysis, and traumatic brain injury from oxygen deprivation. Brain scans showed no function, and she was not expected to survive.
While disconnected from the respirator, Anne found herself in a dimly-lit room containing only a door, which she understood led to death. She then became aware of God's presence as an all-encompassing force of complete, unconditional love in its highest form. Though she saw no figure, she had no doubt this was God. He spoke to her with profound compassion, asking simply, "Are you too tired?" She understood this meant whether she was too tired to go through the door to death. Though she doesn't recall her specific answer, she knows she was given a choice and must have chosen to return. Most remarkably, when Anne returned to consciousness, her severe lupus was completely gone. After years of debilitating pain and suffering from the disease, she came back miraculously healed. All tests for lupus since her NDE have been negative, and she has remained completely well every day since 2005. When disconnected from life support, she surprised everyone by sitting up and talking despite the tracheotomy tube. While she required extensive rehabilitation for the brain damage, her lupus never returned. The experience profoundly deepened Anne's faith and prayer life. She gained absolute certainty that God exists and is pure love. She no longer fears death and experiences periodic moments of "the peace of God that passes all understanding." Anne believes strongly that God still performs miracles today, as evidenced by her complete healing. An ICU doctor even told her directly: "I didn't save your life. I couldn't. God saved your life."
