Yvonne underwent outpatient surgery on her toe in 2004, with no complications anticipated due to her good health. However, during recovery when the breathing tube was removed, she found herself unable to breathe. The recovery nurse persistently instructed her to breathe, staying close to her ear, but Yvonne could not comply despite her efforts. Unable to vocalize her distress, she internally screamed at the nurse in frustration, thinking that if she could breathe, she would.
Realizing she was going to die, Yvonne felt both ironic and aggravated that she would die from a "silly little toe procedure" with her daughter waiting in recovery. She couldn't understand why the medical staff seemed oblivious to her struggle. Her body began shaking, first her legs then her entire body, bouncing on the table. While she could feel the bouncing sensation like being on a washing machine, it was pleasant and painless. Suddenly, Yvonne found herself near the ceiling looking down at her body on the table while simultaneously feeling the physical sensations. She observed the room fill with medical personnel working quickly around her body. A male staff member went to the wall speaker and called "Code red!" then requested her chest x-rays. From her position near the ceiling, Yvonne tried to tell him they didn't have chest x-rays because none had been taken, but he couldn't hear her. Everything then went black. She regained consciousness while being transferred to a hospital room, back in her body with a breathing tube in her nose. The staff provided a breathing device she had to use regularly, keeping her hospitalized until her respiration levels were adequate. The experience transformed her perspective on death, particularly drowning, which she had always feared as the worst way to die. She now understands that death is neither scary nor painful once one lets go.
