Tom was a sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam when he was stung eleven times in the head by wasps after a fellow soldier disturbed a nest. His face swelled so severely that his facial features disappeared. At the MASH unit at LZ Sally, he went into anaphylactic shock, suffering cardiac arrest and complete respiratory failure. As soon as he flatlined, his spirit and soul left his body with no bright lights or tunnels, just rising above the operating table to watch the resuscitation efforts. He felt no fear, anxiety, or concern, just watching and waiting while aware of his continued existence. He observed the surgical team withdrawing blood from one arm while putting new blood into the other arm and administering adrenalin shots. He returned to his body immediately upon resuscitation. The next day, he verified his observations by asking the orderly why they were putting blood in one arm while taking it out of the other. The orderly's shocked response "How the hell did you know we did that, you were gone?" provided the empirical verification Tom needed. This experience, combined with witnessing 97% casualties in his unit, caused him to reexamine everything he believed about death and led to increased spirituality and certainty about consciousness after death.
