Tom was eighteen years old when he was severely beaten to the point of cardiac and respiratory failure. After his heart stopped, he experienced a classic out-of-body experience, seeing his body below while feeling extreme agitation about being dead. A voice told him not to worry, that his problems were left with his body, which brought profound peace and liberation. He then traveled at great speed through a tunnel of light. Though his memory becomes dreamlike afterward, he recalls being intercepted before reaching his destination by his deceased sister and grandmother, who told him it was not yet his time and he must return. He was revived after respiratory and cardiac failure, though he has no memory of how he returned to his body. The experience left him with absolute certainty about the continuation of consciousness after death and transformed his spiritual beliefs from non-religious to believing in a divine power source to which all belong.
