Gary had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 1995 and deteriorated until March 27, 1998, when he suffered a cardiac arrest at home. He was surrounded by total blackness but felt euphoric and very loved. He heard the rescue squad calling his name in the distance, telling him they had shocked him three times and needed a response or they would have to stop. In the darkness, Gary felt he was on a cliff side and KNEW he had to jump across to remain alive. He believed it would be safe to try because if he failed, he would go back to God. His love for his wife and son motivated his return - he felt he couldn't be happy in heaven without them.
After deciding to jump, he reached out fully to grasp anything he could. His hands moved in response, prompting a fourth shock that saved his life. He awoke in intensive care a week later. The rescue squad later confirmed this was unusual - they normally stop after three attempts.
