On October 29, 1964, twenty-year-old Ted was working for the US Forest Service building trails in the Angeles National Forest when a spent bullet bounced off a rock, came through his vehicle window, and hit him in the forehead just above the eyes. The bullet obliterated the superior sagittal sinus and caused massive frontal lobe brain damage. His spirit was immediately transported miles above the scene where he observed Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, and a 360-degree view of Earth's curvature. He felt drawn to the warm, bright sun and became engulfed in its loving warmth.
Ted's consciousness repeatedly alternated between cosmic vistas and his dying body. With each return to his body, he found it blind and lifeless with companions frantically trying to stop the bleeding. Each successive departure propelled him further from Earth - first viewing the moon's orbit, then the solar system, galaxy, universe, cosmos and beyond. After being helicoptered to a hospital, he floated above the operating table observing the medical team's genuine concern. He noticed a sign next to a ventilator that said "You Are Dead" before bouncing off the ceiling and taking refuge behind a curtain. Following a warm siren sound, he was led through a dark tunnel filled with alien souls moving toward redemption's light. Ted encountered a ferryman who transported him across this "sea of despair" to a barren gray landscape with military-style quonset huts. Entering one building, he ascended a staircase where on the fifth step he became centered within enlightenment - a singularity where he witnessed his entire life, his parents' and grandparents' lives, and all accomplishments, failures, and desires both past and future. After returning to the gray landscape and approaching the life-death barrier, his heart ceased functioning. He experienced true nonexistence before doctors resuscitated him multiple times, with his re-entry feeling like the spontaneous coalescence of thoughts from disordered nothingness. Ted describes his experience as a variant of string theory, profoundly transformative yet difficult to adequately express in words. He emphasizes that his description is "futile in comparison to the actual event" and remains humbled by the memory decades later.
