On July 14, 2006, Tanya was visiting a friend in Lompoc, California when a fire extinguisher fell on her foot. At the emergency room, she received x-rays, pain medication, and a breathing treatment for an asthma attack triggered by the foot pain. After the breathing treatment, she continued having difficulty breathing, with her throat closing up. Despite pushing the call button, the nurse dismissed her symptoms as anxiety and told her to relax and take deep breaths. Left alone, Tanya began to panic as she could barely get air into her lungs. When she tried to get up to find help, she fell to the hospital room floor, clawing at her throat in desperation.
Suddenly, her body relaxed completely. Surrounded by darkness, she heard beautiful, gothic-type music like angels singing. She felt herself floating in complete peace and happiness. The contrast between her desperate struggle for air and the sudden peaceful floating sensation was profound. The experience was characterized by the beautiful angelic music and an overwhelming sense of joy and peace despite being surrounded by darkness rather than light. When Tanya woke up hours later, she was in the ICU with a breathing tube down her throat. The doctor explained that when they found her, she had stopped breathing, and they didn't know how long she had been unconscious. The medical emergency was caused by an allergic reaction to the medication given for pain, resulting in respiratory arrest. This was her first near-death experience, occurring at a time when she had no knowledge of NDEs. The experience transformed Tanya's perspective on death completely. Previously terrified of dying, she became excited about it, knowing it would not be the end but the beginning of something new. She described the experience as extremely positive and life-changing, though she clarified she didn't become suicidal but simply lost her fear of death.
