In January 1969, Tallulah was teaching arts and crafts at a school for developmentally disabled children when she tripped and fell on steep stairs. Unaware she was pregnant at the time, she didn't think she was injured. Hours later, she experienced excruciating mid-section pain and collapsed on the classroom floor. Students ran to get the nurse, and as they left, Tallulah realized she couldn't feel anything or move her fingers. She was locked in her body, completely paralyzed. Then she found herself outside her body looking down at herself, unable to get anyone's attention as people entered the room. She began losing her senses one by one as things faded.
Suddenly she was moving at high speed up a tunnel or vortex toward a very bright light, experiencing the most beautiful feeling she'd ever had. She got close enough to make out a doorway with light spilling out from a partially open door. Then the door closed, leaving her in darkness until she came to in the ambulance. According to witnesses, she had no heart rate or respiration when the nurse found her. The medical crisis was a threatened miscarriage of a two-month fetus she didn't know she was carrying. The primary veridical observation was her out-of-body view of herself collapsed on the classroom floor while people came into the room. She could see the scene from above but was unable to communicate with those entering. A nurse at the scene confirmed she had no heart rate or respiration when found, validating the life-threatening nature of the event. The experience included classic NDE elements of paralysis, OBE, tunnel, bright light, and a doorway that closed before she could enter. When Tallulah tried to tell the doctor about her experience in the ambulance, he dismissed it as a dream. She felt desolate, abandoned, and somehow rejected after being sent back. The experience left her knowing there was an afterlife and she had no control over when she would die. This eliminated her previous depressive episodes with suicidal thoughts, and she began living more fearlessly.
