In 1952, sixteen-year-old Hal contracted Tularemia (Rabbit Fever) after cutting himself while cleaning rabbits, developing a dangerously high fever. He was hospitalized, packed in ice, and at one point placed in a body bag. On the second or third day, he experienced a shift in consciousness, finding himself several stories above his bed yet able to see everything in the room clearly. He found himself at a metaphysical crossroads where he understood death lay to his right - a solid sense of a different world - and life to his left. He knew he had complete choice over which path to take. Looking down, he saw his emaciated body and his father weeping while holding his hand - something he'd never witnessed before.
Hal chose to return primarily out of deference to his grieving father. The experience included perception of a void or place of no-dimension/infinite dimension to his right, which profoundly influenced his later spiritual development. He was blind for several weeks after recovery. The NDE set him on a twenty-year quest for understanding, eventually leading to Earth-based spiritual practices. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: Clear out-of-body experience with consciousness existing apart from the physical body supports biblical dualism. The crossroads choice between life and death reflects free will. Witnessing his father's grief from outside his body demonstrates veridical perception. The void/infinite dimension could represent the spiritual realm's incomprehensible nature to human understanding. Unbiblical elements: Later involvement with peyote shamanism and psychotropic drugs for spiritual exploration, though he no longer uses them. His current Earth-based spiritual practice may incorporate non-biblical elements, though specific details aren't provided.
