In June 1988, Roberto experienced a severe gastric hemorrhage with melena after taking nimesulide for a hematoma. After fainting, he found himself looking at the opposite wall when suddenly a fissure opened from which a wonderful white enveloping light emerged. The crack widened and he felt strongly drawn to it while simultaneously seeing himself from above, covered in blood lying on the bed with no doctors around and blood on the floor.
A doctor then appeared and began smacking him, telling him he had to react. At that moment Roberto felt a jolt and returned to his body. The mystical vision vanished, leaving only his aching body and intense cold. When he woke, doctors asked how he was feeling. He told them he felt cold, received an injection, and fell asleep. He woke the next day very ill, remained twenty days without food, had several transfusions, and was discharged after thirty-five days. He only shared this experience with his wife and son. One veridical observation was reported: seeing himself from above covered in blood with blood on the floor while no doctors were present. Roberto experienced the classic fissure of light opening in the wall, felt drawn to cross over, and simultaneously observed his body from an elevated perspective. The experience left Roberto feeling wonderful, with incredible vividness of senses, faster thoughts, and a sense of understanding everything about the universe. He felt the presence of loved ones who had died without seeing them, experienced incredible peace and happiness, and felt united with the world. He describes beautiful emotions and sensations of peace and prosperity with great heat, despite having no desire to return to life even though he had a wife and son. Biblical Assessment: This experience presents classic NDE elements that align well with biblical concepts. The fissure opening with wonderful white light emerging parallels biblical descriptions of heaven opening (Acts 7:56) and divine light breaking through into earthly reality. The out-of-body observation of his bloodied form demonstrates consciousness existing apart from the physical body, supporting biblical dualism. The overwhelming sense of peace and being enveloped in light reflects biblical descriptions of God's presence. Roberto's feeling the presence of deceased loved ones without seeing them avoids the problematic aspect of communication with the dead while acknowledging the communion of saints. The experience is notably free of unbiblical elements. There's no reincarnation, no deceased relatives acting as spirit guides, no universalist messages, and no new age concepts. The simplicity of the vision - light breaking through, out-of-body perspective, and divine peace - maintains biblical compatibility. The transformative effect leading him to share only with close family suggests a sacred experience not to be trivialized. While Roberto doesn't explicitly mention God or religious figures, the quality of light and peace he describes aligns with biblical theophanies. His lack of desire to return despite family obligations might concern some, but reflects Paul's tension in Philippians 1:23 between departing to be with Christ and remaining for others' sake.
