On Memorial Day, May 30, 1996, Robert had a severe motorcycle accident on a wet exit ramp posted at 45 mph. He hit a pothole that caused the front forks to collapse, locking the front tire into the exhaust pipes. He was thrown over the handlebars, the bike flipped, and the rear tire struck him in the back. He lost consciousness and arrived at the hospital dead.
During his death experience, Robert found himself in the emergency room standing behind a doctor, looking over his shoulder at his own body on the ER bed. He then left through the double doors and found himself opening the front door of his house. He walked to his bedroom where his wife was asleep, reached down and shook her legs. She jumped up and called his name. The phone rang in the kitchen, and as she went to answer it, Robert followed her to the front door, said "I have to get back now and I love you," then went out. He found himself back in his body with doctors hovering over him. The phone call was the hospital telling his wife he was there and might not survive. She noticed the front door had been left open. Two specific veridical observations were reported: seeing himself in the ER from behind a doctor, and shaking his wife's legs at home. His wife independently confirmed she felt him touch her legs and found the front door open. On July 4, 1996, while discussing the accident with neighbors, his wife confirmed feeling his touch and waking up just before the phone rang. Robert spent 36 hours at one hospital with a collapsed lung, broken tibia, and two spinal fractures. After nine days in ICU and back surgery at a second hospital, he spent three months at a rehabilitation facility. The experience convinced him that the spirit lives on after bodily death. He also reports developing telepathic connection with another person and experienced two miraculous events in Austria where prayer restored his seized motorcycle engine and refilled an empty gas tank. Biblical Assessment: This remarkable out-of-body experience provides compelling evidence for consciousness existing independently of the physical body.
