On a cold November night in 1974 in Canada, Rick was involved in a severe high-speed head-on collision. He was thrown 150 feet from his car, traveling through the air at 75-100 mph, ending with his head hitting the hard ground. He was officially declared brain dead and remained so for six days on full life support. When he regained consciousness, the entire left side of his body was paralyzed, and he couldn't even spell his own name. His recovery was miraculous - within one week he was able to walk again.
Rick didn't remember his death experience until twenty years later in 1994. He recalls his spirit seeing overwhelming and wondrous light, being drawn toward it as it became larger. He found himself in a brightly lit tunnel with other spirits moving past him. Standing still midway through the tunnel, he reviewed his entire life and contemplated whether to return to Earth. He received an incredible amount of knowledge about life, death, and the afterlife, though God told him he wouldn't be allowed to retain this knowledge upon return. God spoke to him using his middle name "John," which only God could know was what Rick preferred to be called. Rick was given the choice to return or continue, though he somehow already knew he would be returning before being offered the choice. No specific veridical observations were reported during the NDE itself. The experience was primarily characterized by the tunnel of light, life review, divine communication, and receiving temporary knowledge. Rick was told it would be very hard to live out his life in his physical body again, but he promised God he would tell many people about his experience. Rick experienced multiple miracles after his NDE, including two on the same day in Austria: his motorcycle engine completely seized on the autobahn but started perfectly after prayer, and later he ran completely out of gas but found the tank full after praying. He strongly believes in predestination and cites Psalm 139:5 and John 5:19 as supporting this doctrine. Biblical Assessment: This experience strongly aligns with biblical accounts of divine encounters and temporary death. Like the apostle Paul's experience of being caught up to the third heaven and hearing "inexpressible things" (2 Corinthians 12:2-4), Rick received knowledge he was not permitted to retain. God addressing him by his preferred middle name demonstrates the intimate knowledge God has of each person, as Jesus said "the very hairs of your head are all numbered" (Matthew 10:30). The concept of life review aligns with biblical teaching about accountability for our lives. The subsequent miracles echo biblical accounts of divine provision. The experience contains no unbiblical elements. There's no reincarnation, universalism, occult practices, or new age concepts. Rick's strong belief in predestination following his experience aligns with Reformed theology and numerous biblical passages. His dedication to sharing his testimony fulfills the biblical mandate to be witnesses. The temporary nature of the special knowledge prevents any gnostic-type claims of secret wisdom. The experience powerfully supports consciousness existing independently of the physical brain, given his six days of brain death, while remaining fully compatible with biblical anthropology.
