At age four, Niel went to a swimming pool alone to retrieve coins from the bottom. Unable to reach the pool's edge after jumping in, he began drowning and accepted death. His mother jumped the fence and dove in to save him, with her image appearing distorted through the water. He observed his family huddled over his body while being unable to communicate with them - a classic out-of-body experience with visual observations from an elevated perspective.
Niel experienced a tunnel with an extremely bright light that didn't hurt his eyes, feeling he belonged there with incredible peace and bliss.
