In 1990, Monty and a friend were driving to Fresno when their car hit a pickup truck that crossed into their lane. During impact, Monty hit his head on the roof, windshield, and dashboard. A pool stick wedged between his knees pushed into his chest, cracking his sternum. He felt bones sticking out and had trouble breathing, telling his friend to care for his son as he thought he was dying. In the ambulance, the EMT tried keeping him awake but yelled "We're losing him!" Monty then found himself surrounded by total darkness with a single spotlight shining down from above. He could see himself and kept repeating "You have to wake up," feeling he wasn't alone despite seeing only the light above. Next, he saw his mother and her friend walking down the hospital hall toward a covered body on a gurney pushed to the side. He woke up on that gurney and pulled the sheet off his face - his mother was visibly shaken as hospital staff had declared him dead and he was awaiting the morgue. Monty now believes we live on after death, walks and talks with God daily, and realizes we are part of something greater. He felt God's presence during the experience though didn't see Him directly.
