In August 1959, Mitchell was on a family outing at a swimming area in Idaho. He and his cousin ran ahead and jumped in the water. Mitchell kept his tennis shoes on to protect his feet from the rocky bottom. While swimming toward a raft about 50 feet away, his water-filled shoes became too heavy and he could not move his legs enough to continue. In panic, he tried to swim back but was going under repeatedly, swallowing water and crying for help. His cousin tried to save him but Mitchell was fighting too much, so the cousin went for help. After going under and giving up, Mitchell saw sunlight slanting through the water, then suddenly was high in the air viewing himself floating face down. He could see his cousin waving for help and his dad running toward the water. He saw another man jump up and run to help. Mitchell wanted to tell his dad not to be scared because he was in a safe place. His deceased grandmother appeared beside him (he knew she was there without seeing her) and said "You have to go back Mitchell, you cannot be here yet." The next thing he knew, he was being carried up the beach by the rescuer. Mitchell describes feeling incredible peace, safety, and a golden glow during the experience.
