In March 2007, Marty experienced clinical death from a heart attack. He found himself in total blackness and wondered "What?" - not in English or any language, but as the essence of the word. He had no cognizance of anything previous, feeling like he had just been born as an inquisitive youth. On his left, he saw plants and blue sky forming, sensing welcome and love from them. He felt he was in a country meadow as they materialized in front of him, sensing something wonderful beyond them.
Marty couldn't wait to explore beyond the forming landscape when suddenly he sensed he couldn't move. Looking down, he saw a vast area containing many little individual areas. One area flashed, and at that point, he knew it was this life and had to come back. He said "Oh, no!" in English because he didn't want to leave that wonderful place. In an instant, he opened his eyes and looked at the EMT busily trying to save his life, thinking only "Why did he have to bring me away from that wonderful place?" The experience included feelings of wonder, joy, excitement, and a distinct feeling of being "whole." He felt incredible peace and joy, united with the world, and suddenly understood everything about the universe. When looking down at the vast area, he saw what he believes were other lifetimes - time or existence with little areas representing different lives. He reached a boundary when he tried to go beyond the trees and could not move, coming to a barrier he wasn't permitted to cross. Before his NDE, Marty had been raised Lutheran but became atheistic about ten years prior. After the experience, he now has very spiritual moments but rejects all religions, seeing them as bogged down with primitive dogma, meaningless rituals, and distorted interpretations. He learned that spirits have many previous lives as well as lives yet to come, understanding the importance of unconditional love and following the Golden Rule. He feels there's one thing left to do in this life: unite with a soul mate or "twin flame," though this sadly hasn't happened. The experience gave him answers to many things he had contemplated and made him understand the relationship of spirit to body. Biblical Assessment: Marty's experience contains both compatible and highly problematic elements from a biblical perspective. The initial encounter with a beautiful realm of plants and sky sensing love could represent Paradise or the restored creation described in Scripture. The feeling of wholeness and understanding aligns with 1 Corinthians 13:12 about knowing fully. The barrier preventing further progress is consistent with God's sovereignty over death's timing. His emphasis on unconditional love and the Golden Rule reflects Christ's teaching to love others as ourselves. However, several elements directly contradict biblical doctrine. The belief in multiple past and future lives (reincarnation) explicitly contradicts Hebrews 9:27 - "it is appointed for men to die once, and after this the judgment." His rejection of all religions including Christianity, viewing them as primitive and distorted, opposes Christ's establishment of the church and the authority of Scripture. The concept of "twin flames" or soul mates as life's ultimate purpose replaces God-centered purpose with human relationship. His atheism transforming into vague spirituality without Christ fails to acknowledge Jesus as the way, truth, and life (John 14:6). While the experience produced spiritual awareness, it led him away from biblical truth toward new age concepts of reincarnation and universalism, making it incompatible with conservative evangelical Christianity.
