Eight-and-a-half-year-old Marie was sick with viral hepatitis in July 1965. During the first days of her illness, she was in a kind of coma. She found herself outside of her body, watching herself from above. She saw herself lying in bed with her arms down by her sides, feeling soothed, very calm, and light. When she stopped watching herself "sleeping," she saw in front of her a very bright corridor without walls - pale white at the beginning, becoming brighter toward the end.
As Marie entered the tunnel, she felt as if she were pushing through light, fluffy cotton and felt wonderful. The tunnel was cotton-like and white with no walls, with light all around her that was sharpest at the end. She experienced her hearing becoming muffled, as if wrapped in cotton. She felt very light and enveloped in softness, experiencing incredible peace, happiness, and harmony with the universe. Suddenly, she felt herself falling back into her body. From her mother's perspective, Marie had gone from lying on the bed to having her eyes wide open and rolled back into her head at some point. Her mother had shaken her, but she hadn't responded and couldn't be roused when called. After the experience, Marie immediately asked her father about fish in a lake, saying she had seen tons of them looking at her strangely, though this seems to be confusion from another memory. Since the NDE, Marie has had flashes of insight about the future. Initially, she didn't understand what she was seeing, but over the years, as she discovered her psychic abilities, her ability to have insight into the future was confirmed. A psychic later showed her that she had these abilities, and she has experienced increasing premonitory feelings, flashes, and dreams. She questions whether the inner feelings during such experiences could be explored more deeply. Biblical Assessment: Marie's childhood NDE contains several elements consistent with biblical descriptions of spiritual experiences. The out-of-body experience parallels Paul's account in 2 Corinthians 12:2-3 of being caught up, whether in or out of the body. The bright corridor of increasing light aligns with biblical imagery of God as light (1 John 1:5) and the path of the righteous shining brighter (Proverbs 4:18). The cotton-like softness and incredible peace reflect the comfort and peace of God's presence described throughout Scripture. Her young age during the experience aligns with Jesus's teaching about children's special relationship with the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:14). However, the development of psychic abilities and premonitory dreams after the experience raises significant concerns from a conservative evangelical perspective. The Bible explicitly forbids divination and fortune-telling (Deuteronomy 18:10-12), considering such practices as occult. While the childhood experience itself contains no inherently unbiblical elements, the subsequent development of psychic abilities through consultation with a psychic contradicts biblical teaching. The experience lacks explicit Christian content such as encounters with Jesus or angels. Overall, while the initial experience could be interpreted as a divine comfort to a sick child, the later embrace of psychic abilities makes this incompatible with biblical Christianity.
