Maria was six months pregnant when she was violently attacked in November 2005. She was kicked in her belly, beaten, and struck on her head. She doesn't remember much of the attack itself, only the beginning before everything went missing from her memory. Her unborn child was killed in the attack, and she was left in critical condition requiring surgery and intensive care.
Maria's next memory was observing from above as a young lady lay in a hospital bed with several people standing around her. The medical staff were speaking to each other, then began talking more forcefully to the patient, touching her and clapping their hands in her face trying to wake her. She wanted to go to her child but felt her decision wouldn't be accepted and was sent back. The voices at her bedside became louder, the tunnel disappeared, and she was suddenly back in bed, with pain as her first sensation. Since the experience, Maria finds it more difficult to form relationships, feeling superficiality in most encounters and refusing to deal with interpersonal problems that seem meaningless. She isolates herself while wishing for deep connections. She has become increasingly sensitive to noise and seeks silence, which brings her peace.
