Maria was giving birth to her daughter when severe complications arose. The delivery progressed normally until the final stage when the baby did not engage properly in the birth canal. Without anesthesia, she was opened and her daughter was born with tearing to the uterus. After being taken to her room, Maria began bleeding severely, losing more than two liters of blood. She felt herself fading and told her husband she was dying.
Maria experienced leaving her body and feeling weightless, stuck to the ceiling of the room. From above, she could see the bed with her inert body and the crib with her newborn daughter. She felt no pain at all. Then came a moment of darkness with no sense of time, but she felt fine, peaceful, with no cares, and warm. She sensed a small, brilliant light far away behind her rather than seeing it with her eyes, but knew it was there. Gradually, Maria began hearing distant voices talking about her and calling her name. She did not want to come back but knew she was returning as she began to feel her body again. She found herself in an operating theatre with a doctor speaking to her. The hardest part was trying to communicate - she wanted to speak but no words came initially. Bit by bit she returned to herself and could speak again. Since the experience, Maria no longer fears dying, believing death is part of life from the moment we enter the world. She gained the ability to predict things about facts or people she doesn't know. She believes religion is just a way of keeping people deceived unless one has an experience of this kind. For twenty-six years, this has been the best experience she has had, viewing it as neither traumatic nor painful but as an enrichment of her present life. Biblical Assessment: Maria's experience contains several elements consistent with biblical accounts of near-death experiences and spiritual encounters. The out-of-body experience aligns with Paul's description in 2 Corinthians 12:2-3 of being "caught up to the third heaven" whether in or out of the body. The brilliant light she sensed could represent the divine light described throughout Scripture, as God is light (1 John 1:5). The peace and warmth experienced reflect the biblical promise of God's perfect peace. The reluctance to return to earthly life echoes Paul's tension in Philippians 1:23 between departing to be with Christ and remaining in the flesh. However, several aspects raise concerns from a conservative evangelical perspective. Maria's conclusion that "religion is just a way of keeping people deceived" directly contradicts biblical teaching about the importance of faith and the church. Her development of predictive abilities about unknown people resembles divination, which Scripture prohibits (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). The absence of any encounter with God, Jesus, angels, or any life review differs from biblical visions. While her loss of fear of death is positive, her rejection of organized religion and development of psychic abilities are problematic from a biblical standpoint. The experience, while containing some compatible elements, led to conclusions that contradict orthodox Christian teaching about the necessity of faith and the dangers of occult practices.
