Margaret J experienced an NDE on March 23, 1980, when a car traveling at high speed struck her driver's door at a blind intersection. At the moment of impact, she felt anger that she didn't have time to scream and thought "I don't want to die!" All the people close to her flashed through her mind. She reached out to brace herself on the dashboard but pulled back, fearing she might lose her arm. The violent collision spun her car until the back end hit a pole, preventing her from bashing into the far door. Her boyfriend had convinced her not to wear a seatbelt a week earlier, telling her it would get her killed.
During the crash's chaos, Margaret heard "the sound of silence" for the first time in her life, despite the loud and violent noise of the wreck. She flew to the safe side of the car and wanted desperately to sleep but couldn't due to broken glass everywhere. When a man with a gash on his forehead asked if she was alright, she said "I guess so," and felt forgiveness flow over her for the person who hit her. The pivotal moment came when Margaret began jumping on clouds, feeling wonderful and not caring about those left behind. She experienced great joy and freedom in this clearly mystical realm. The clouds appeared beautiful, and years later when flying on a plane, she recognized the same beautiful appearance. However, as she started feeling pain, she thought "Oh no, I must be alive!" and was pulled back into her body. Police, ambulance, and about eighty people were watching when she returned. She stood there with one shoe and cuts all over, asking a man to retrieve her other shoe from the green car. The experience left Margaret with no fear of death and complete certainty about its reality. She can vividly picture it all in her mind and return to the experience at will. She yearns for that freedom again and looks forward to being free as soon as her earthly work is done. The profound peace, incredible joy, and sense of unity with the universe she experienced created a lasting spiritual transformation. She gained understanding about everything in the universe during those moments. From a biblical perspective, this experience of consciousness during severe trauma, the realm of clouds, and overwhelming peace supports the existence of the soul beyond physical death. The forgiveness she felt toward her attacker reflects Christian teachings about forgiveness.
