Manfred K, age 50, experienced cardiac arrest in September 2009 during a cardiac catheter procedure at a clinic in Straubing, Germany. His heart stopped beating and he was resuscitated after 30 minutes, then placed in an induced coma for 5-6 days with deliberately lowered body temperature. His extensive out-of-body experience during this time included multiple realms and encounters that felt like an intensive dream but which he knew to be real.
During resuscitation, Manfred stood behind the medical staff, trying to peer through gaps between them to see his own body - notably, he did not float overhead but remained at ground level. While in the coma, he experienced being in a massive alternate clinic for 10-20 thousand people, with halls, caves, tents, a train station for transporting patients, and trucks delivering medication. The tents and sky were intensely red, while buildings and vehicles were white and steel blue. He recognized specific locations including two churches in Hengersberg and Niederalterich and the Bavarian forest. Manfred had numerous veridical experiences. Ice crystals grew on his fingers when his body temperature was being lowered. He was aware of specific medical procedures and the order in which they were performed. He met his deceased aunt Marie, who appeared more educated than in life and told him "You cannot go just like that. You are now 50 years old and you should take responsibility." He encountered six angels appearing as holograms who he felt were protecting him. After promising to help people with psychological problems and dying people, he felt warmth go through him. The experience profoundly transformed Manfred's life. He lost his fear of death, became less materialistic, and developed abilities to help ill patients ease their pain and think positively. He works in a Benedictine abbey where life and death themes are openly discussed. Notably, he helped a 7-year-old girl whose father had died by telling her about souls being transported by trains, which brought her comfort. He continues to have enhanced perception and can tap into experiences during half-sleep states. From a biblical perspective, this experience contains both orthodox elements (angelic beings, deceased relatives, purposeful return) and some unusual features (the alternate realm structure, train transportation of souls) that don't directly contradict scripture but aren't typically biblical.
