Six-year-old Lysa experienced clinical death following a tonsillectomy in 1963 when she suffered a blood clot and was rushed back to surgery for a complete blood transfusion. She then floated up to the ceiling where she could see through the wall to another room, recognizing young women from her ward sleeping in their beds. She found herself in what seemed like a viewing gallery with a very tall, strong, serious woman who held her hand and was "in charge" of her. From this vantage point, Lysa watched her father come into the theatre to see her as doctors thought she was dying. She felt no particular sorrow for him or desire to return. The woman holding her hand commanded her to get back into her body. When Lysa said she was scared and didn't know how, the woman firmly said "go down now." Lysa asked what she should tell them about the experience, then found herself back in her body with a nurse stroking her face. She immediately said "Where am I?" though she knew exactly what had happened. The experience had profound lasting effects. Lysa stayed in the hospital for three weeks and told her mother and nurses about the experience, though nothing more was said. The nurses later confirmed the layout of the operating theatre matched her description. After returning home, she became talented at drawing and poetry, transforming into a serious, knowing little girl. She became more mature for her years with heightened sensitivity to others' needs. The experience gave her knowledge that she had more work to do on earth, though this felt daunting. From a biblical perspective, this experience demonstrates consciousness during clinical death and veridical perception beyond physical limitations, supporting dualist views of human nature. The authoritative female figure could represent an angel, and the command to return aligns with divine sovereignty over life and death.
