Lynn S, a second-year chemistry major, experienced an out-of-body experience during septic shock from a ruptured appendix in January 1980. After 72 hours of undiagnosed illness, she was admitted to the hospital and initially improved with IV fluids and antibiotics. However, 26 hours after admission she worsened dramatically, experiencing what she described as "impending doom." Her appendix had ruptured, walled itself off, and re-ruptured several times.
During the crisis, Lynn observed herself from above, seeing her body on the bed with brown vomit rolling from her mouth onto the white sheet. She had lost all bodily control but was floating in the corner of the room with a dark cloud about half her size. For the first time in days, she felt complete relief from pain and nausea. She was surrounded by intense brightness that funneled ahead, with warmth and pleasantness. She and her "cloud" floated deeper into the brightness, which she described as perfection, with no fear. Lynn had multiple veridical observations during her OBE. She watched from above as medical staff worked on her body, seeing the top of a nurse's white hat and clearly looking down at everyone. When staff touched her, she would pop back into her body temporarily. She observed being wheeled to surgery, floating above the gurney with her cloud companion. In the elevator, she noticed the doors wouldn't close until the cloud arrived, then they closed in slow motion. She followed her body into the operating room, floating near the ceiling until an anesthesiologist placed a mask over her face. The surgeon later dismissed her experience as shock, but Lynn went on to medical school and now cares for dying patients. She is certain her experience was real, not shock or a dream. The transition from despair to peaceful euphoria and back convinced her the mind cannot create such experiences. She discovered that human touch, even from strangers, could bring her back from death. The experience left her with no fear of death and certainty that the journey continues beyond death. From a biblical perspective, this experience demonstrates consciousness independent of the physical body, supporting dualist understanding of human nature. The presence of light and peace aligns with biblical imagery of divine presence. However, the "cloud" companion is unusual and not clearly biblical, though it could represent an angel or spiritual guide.
