Lynn R was hit by a drunk driver traveling upwards of 80mph on January 22, 2009. The impact was directly on her driver's door, causing extensive injuries including nine pelvic fractures, all left ribs broken into pieces, skull fracture, and a nearly severed diaphragm. She has no memory of the impact or immediate aftermath, only her experience in what she describes as a "cocoon" of light. She was kept in an induced coma for several weeks following the accident.
During the experience, Lynn found herself in a place of soft, golden light that surrounded her like a hazy curtain or cocoon. She was completely relaxed and content, watching small bubbles travel up the curtain of light, wondering if they might be prayers. She expected her deceased biological father to walk through the curtain and lead her through, feeling certain he was just on the other side. She waited for what seemed like days in complete contentment. The key veridical element occurred when Lynn looked to her left and downward, seeing her husband standing with her children and son-in-law holding her grandchild. As she watched them, she perceived rays of light in different colors emanating from each family member, which she understood to be their love for her. This vision of her family's love convinced her she couldn't go with her father but had to stay. She later confirmed that her family had indeed been gathered at the hospital during her coma. Upon awakening, Lynn discovered she had been in a coma for weeks. She had fragmentary memories of family visits - some only voices, others faces, and some she just "knew" had been there. Remarkably, her adoptive father showed her a newspaper photo of her wrecked Explorer with a huge light over the hood that looked like a small sun, confirming the light she experienced. The experience left her with no fear of death and a longing for that contentment again.
