Lynn experienced clinical death during a code situation in an intensive care unit three days after a life-threatening auto accident. She reported feeling tremendous peace as pain faded, and noted this experience differed from her previous out-of-body experiences from childhood trauma - this time there was no "thread" keeping her connected to her body. She encountered her deceased father (who had been absent since she was three) and deceased brother (died eleven years earlier), who said they had been watching her. She felt joy and acceptance from thousands of people who seemed to know her.
Lynn observed the code team working on her body, saw chest tubes being inserted, and knew each person's name and thoughts - feeling she could be everywhere at once. She was shown answers about life that brought tremendous peace and joy. A voice suddenly said "Stop! It is not her time" and told her she had more to learn. She was pulled back into her painful body and cooperated by inhaling. During her experience, Lynn had remarkable veridical perceptions. She accurately described the layout of the operating theatre, knew the names of medical staff she had never met before, and was aware of exactly what each person did and felt during the code. Her doctor told the family to expect brain damage from severe lack of oxygen, but there was none. Many staff members who had been at the code later avoided her because she knew their names and what they had done and felt during the emergency. After returning, Lynn found she could tap into a peace that assured her everything would be okay even when things seemed wrong. She felt she had lived life with her nose against a highway billboard trying to read it, and the experience took her far enough away to clearly understand what it said - though she wasn't allowed to remember all of it. From a biblical perspective, this experience contains several orthodox elements including the encounter with deceased relatives, the sense of divine timing ("not her time"), and the acquisition of spiritual knowledge. The presence of a authoritative voice determining her return aligns with divine sovereignty. However, the mention of "thousands of people" knowing her and the universal acceptance she felt could suggest universalist themes not fully aligned with evangelical theology.
