Lonny F, a 15-year-old expert swimmer and swim team member, experienced a profound NDE while swimming off Coronado Island, California. The day after a Pacific Ocean earthquake that caused only minor tremors on land, he went swimming despite yellow caution flags. After swimming through waves, he was caught in an unusual rip tide that pulled him far from shore. Three massive 17-foot tidal waves, aftershock waves from the earthquake, struck him in succession, repeatedly slamming him to the ocean floor and holding him pinned in a seated position by powerful currents.
After being trapped underwater through three wave cycles, his lungs burning intensely, Lonny inhaled water and drowned on the ocean floor. Everything went black, then suddenly became pure white - a brightness that should have blinded him but didn't. As his eyes adjusted, he found himself walking on a beautiful white sandy beach with trees and flowers in the distance. Realizing he had died, he heard a voice and felt a presence. A man materialized after receiving Lonny's telepathic permission - appearing ageless (could be 20 or 40), with white silk-like hair and a well-trimmed beard. Communication occurred entirely through thought. When asked if he wanted to live, Lonny immediately said yes. The being smiled as if expecting this answer, and Lonny felt they had always known each other. The being explained he couldn't directly interfere but could show Lonny what he already knew. Lonny was then pulled into a black void where his entire life review flashed before him like photos arranged as a serpent in space. Flying through every moment from earliest memory to present, then reversing, he heard the being say "Now find it." The life review stopped at age 8 when Lonny had watched a man body surfing at the same beach. The man had taught him the technique: wait for the wave, swim freestyle kicking hard, pull arms to sides, arch back, and ride the wave. Young Lonny had tried but never mastered it. The being said "You have it, now use it." Immediately returning to consciousness on the ocean floor, Lonny pushed off and used this forgotten technique to successfully body surf to shore on the next massive wave. A lifeguard who had been watching confirmed Lonny had been underwater for 6-7 minutes and described seeing him "shoot out of the water like a torpedo." The lifeguard called it the most amazing thing he'd ever seen. Lonny later learned these were aftershock waves from the earthquake, with some exceeding 17 feet. The experience left him with lasting effects including temporary water phobia but ultimately strengthened his certainty that God is real and life continues after death.
